Spotlight: Wade's Music Studio
I recently had the chance to speak with Damon Wade of Wade's Music Studio about music, Bethel and his studio.
Brad: When did you start giving music lessons?
Damon: I started giving lessons right after college. I landed a job teaching guitar at Astoria Music in Astoria, Queens. I loved that job. I was there about six months and then I hit the road with a top 40 cover band.
Brad: Why did you begin offering music lessons?
Damon: To pay the rent and pass on what I have learned. At a certain point one realizes there giftings. For me it's music and teaching. As a small business owner I wear many "musical" hats to provide for my family. Music teacher, performer, band leader, booking agent, producer, recording engineer, recording artist, singer songwriter, piano tuner, piano technician, piano rebuilder and piano salesman. Music lessons have always been the bread and butter of how I provide.
Brad: So, what's your musical background?
Damon: I first learned how to play blues music. I had no idea what it was, it just came naturally to me. I must have been 11 or 12 when I started lessons. I played with a bunch of friends through middle school and high school. I got serious about music in college. I ended up with a Jazz performance and music ed degree. It was a time to completely immerse my self in music. I would eat, drink and sleep music. I loved it! As far as styles of music go. I'm a blues, rock, jazz, fingerpicking' spiritual, roots kind of guy.
Brad: What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Damon: Without question, I love to see my students progress. To see the joy and self confidence grow in students as they practice and perform new material is a privilege and honor.
Brad: Do you have any funny or interesting stories? You don't have to name names.
Damon: Playing in bands and how a band gets paid has always been kind of interesting. Back in the day I was playing in a band called the Soul Poets. We had a gig in this after hours dive club in Queens. We played our hearts for 4 hours straight. It was a great gig, tons of people dancing all through the night. Time to get paid and my band leader say's the club owners have no money for us, but they do have chicken wings. We all ate chicken wings until the sun came up.
Brad: What do you like best about your location on Greenwood Avenue?
Damon: I love it here in down town. Lots of people, everything is close, the whistle of the train and the church bell ringing.
Brad: What would you like our readers to know about you?
Damon: I love my wife, I love my kids, I love my family, I love God, I love music, I love Bethel, I love to teach and I love my students.
