First Selectman Race Update
Steve Deuschle Withdraws From Race and Matt Knickerbocker Announces Bid For Re-election

Selectmen Straiton and Szatkowski also announce re-election bids

Steve Deuschle, who had received the endorsement of the Republican Town Committee to run in the November election for Bethel First Selectman, has announced this week that he will be withdrawing from the race due to family reasons. Republican Town Committee Chair Bryan Terzian said "I said from the beginning Steve has got incredible moral fiber and character, and he is not running due to family reasons. I totally support his decision. Family comes first and that's the type of guy Steve is. He's dedicated to his family. I understand his reasoning and support his decision. That's Steve. Anyone who knows Steve knows he's a very dedicated family man."

When asked about fielding a new candidate for Town First Selectman, Mr. Terzian said "Obviously over the next couple of months we'll start interviewing people who are interested in running, but I feel it's our responsibility to pick a candidate that is a good fit for the Town and is going to do a good job, and, more importantly, listen to people." He continued, "We had that in Steve and we're going to have to do some work to find a candidate with similar beliefs and values."

Also this week, First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker, first elected to the position in 2009, announced his re-election bid, along with Selectman Richard Straiton. "We love what we do, and there is no greater honor than serving the wonderful people of Bethel, as we have done for the past decade," Knickerbocker said as he and Straiton made their announcement at the Bethel Democrats annual fundraiser banquet at Michael's at The Grove.

Republican Paul Szatkowski, who has served on the Board of Selectmen for 15 years, has also announced his bid for re-election.
